My Body is My Weapon

From the fading shoreline of my homeland To relentless viciousness in the seasoning camps I’ve had your name inflicted on me As well as your barbarity and the vastness of your grief I face the east to watch the sun rise And understand that it is the origin of life With reluctance I force myself to face the west And mourn my stay in the land of death I face you with the resolution That my life will never go unwritten I face myself with a final understanding That in an apartheid nation my body is my weapon Seasons change, and while the storm winds might steal away My breath but they do not take with them my pain My body was expected to endure Inhuman conditions because my existence was profane I face the east to watch the sun rise And understand that it is the origin of life With reluctance I force myself to face the west And mourn my stay in the land of death I face you with the resolution That my life will never go unwritten I face myself with a final understanding That in an apartheid nation my body is my weapon Prejudice is an attitude, and discrimination is an action Racism is a system…and you still benefit in that system Without ever having to take the direct action of discrimination This is why even when you name yourself ally You continue to refuse your boot is on my neck Or remove it And I’m too exhausted to take another step Carrying my weight and yours through endless doors And flaming rings and having to tell you this is a mansion instead of a admitting it’s a wreck I’m alive, I exist, I’m human and need full autonomy No more forced deference, and no more supressed self defense Witness my joy, experience me thriving With every breath I take part of you is dying For me to stand, to be seen, leaves you blind Whoever trained you to suffer this way lied I face the east to watch the sun rise And understand that it is the origin of life With reluctance I force myself to face the west And mourn my stay in the land of death I face you with the resolution That my life will never go unwritten I face myself with a final understanding That in an apartheid nation my body is my weapon
